There is no debate that you are going to die. We all will at some point. How long before you do is up to you. There are skills within your control to prevent catastrophe at bay. One is mental and the other is physical. Finding the balance is the key to both.
Each time you sit down or stand up there are certain habits that either promote healthy movements or weakness within the core. When a todler moves, they move with grace. Freely moving without judgement or fear. We only gain the fear as we age because the projection of it we learn from our parents. They teach us what worked or didn’t work for them and we become it.
That’s the mental skills we need to rewire. Now let’s get to the physical side…
There is a study to test ability to sit and rise from the floor as a predictor of all-cause mortality. The movements are simple and can be very difficult at the same time. The simplest way to explain the movements is to get up off the floor without using your hands.
Sitting to standing with no hands will tell you if your core strength is where it needs to be. It also predicts id you’re going to fall because of the lack of strength and balance. The study is for the population of 51-80 year old people. I like to test everyone because of the awareness it brings.
I test this on day one with my one on one assessments. However, this test happens for you at the end of the 365 WOD Journey because day one would of been a train reck for some and be too disappointed. The test is simple and yet can be very difficult at the same time. Each time you use your hands, a point is deducted. Start with 10. Getting anything below a six means you’re most likely to die in the next six years.
That may be the case for the 51-80 year old people. It’s not likely for people below those ages. However the awareness is accurate though. Give this a try along with WOD #364 and let me know what your score was. Email me at YGT@JedKobernusz. It means the world to me that you do.
Have Fun!
