Mindless Eating Leads To Weight GainSitting and watching the nightly news with a bowl full of your favorite snack can lead to weight gain. My bowl was filled with ice cream every night. It’s called Mindless Eating and before I learned what it was I was doing it way more than I was aware of. Therefore mindless eating leads to weight gain. There have been studies to prove this and a book sums up in a great and entertaining way. This mindset coaching article will provide insight into what happens when you mindlessly eat and a few ways to increase your awareness to break the habit.

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind

Have you ever heard of the saying “out of sight out of mind”? That age-old saying has way more truth than you would think. If you have the candy jar sitting in sight the odds that you’ll grab a handful are drastically higher. Simply put the jar in the cupboard on the very top shelf. Make sure it is a chore to get to it. Because we are naturally drawn to the path of least resistance it will take work to get to the candy. As a result of that small change, when the craving for the candy comes on, the odds of you following through with that mindless craving are dramatically lower.

 Free Isn’t Always Free

Mindless eating will lead to weight gain because grocery stores set up the products in a way that tricks our mind. Why do you think the sale colors and other ads are set up in such a way? Big letters, catchy font, wild colors mean a great deal right? Not always. It’s a way to make you think you’re getting a great deal. The truth about marketing is that it makes you feel. When you put feeling into your purchase it sets up a habit. Then you mindlessly buy because of placement.

Think about why all the kids’ cereals are on the bottom two shelves. It’s because that’s where the kids’ shop. Also, why do supermarkets serve you food on the weekends? To give you free lunch? Hell no! You’re taking in all those high sugar, high sodium foods thinking, yum I’m going to get me some of these! Meanwhile, it takes nothing to employ a person to stand there and make that junk all day. Taking in those calories leads to extra work later. Skip the crap food and you’ll actually save money too.

Mindless Eating Why We Eat More Than We Think – By Brian Wansink, Ph.D.

The book Mindless Eating Why We Eat More Than We Think is a great resource for more information. The book lays it out in an entertaining way. Trust me when it comes to reading because my ADHD is ramped up when I try to read anything. When I start a book and I can’t put it down, it means that it intrigues me. The studies in this book are mind-blowing. The cover has popcorn on the front because of a study they did about movie theater popcorn.

In conclusion of this mindset coaching article don’t’ be fooled by your current routine of life. Mindless eating leads to weight gain because we lose the ability to mix it up a bit. Because spontaneity takes a little work at first, but when you love the awareness that comes with it, nothing will be eaten mindlessly anymore. Lastly, mindless eating leads to weight gain, but it doesn’t have to. The next time you want that snack on the top shelf, do your WOD first. Then if you still want it, go get it. You earned it.
